Acne is one of the biggest skin disorders that affects women and men alike. The worst part of acne, is that it usually occurs at age of adolescence when people value their appearance the most. Genetics, skin care, hormones, and lifestyle can all play a major role in causing acne, however, proper care and diet can help prevent, or at the very least reduce the appearance of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and blemishes. There are many reasons as to why a person may develop acne, one of the most common reasons is active hormone production leading to excess oil secretion in the skin's sebaceous glands. As a result, hair follicles become clogged by oil, dirt, and dead skin cells, leading to the redness and swelling of skin.
Listed below are a few prevention tips that help eliminate or reduce the appearance of acne:
- Don't pop! Picking and squeezing causes bacteria to penetrate deeper into the skin causing inflammation. Also, surrounding skin may become damaged, leaving unwanted permanent acne scars.
- Don't touch! As tempting as it may be, the more you touch, the more breakouts you'll get. Propionibacterium ances are the bacteria that cause breakouts and are usually found on the skin. The bacteria finds its way into your skin and begins its job.
- Wash after working out, it's important to you immediately after each workout. Heat and moisture get trapped against your skin creating an excellent breeding ground for bacteria.
- Don't over wash. Over washing stimulates the production of oil, causing more breakouts and irritation of skin.
- Avoid alcohol based washes. Alcohol strips the top layer of your skin, causing sebaceous glands to produce more oil. This makes your skin dry and irritated, creating more blemishes.
- See a dermatologist. With the more severe cases, when self prevention from acne is not effective, consider consulting a dermatologist. You may need to receive over-the-counter products, hormone balancing drugs, or anti-androgens to control your acne.
- Consider spa treatments, such as:
- Ozone therapy. Known for it's antibacterial properties, ozone therapy successfully fights inflammation and doesn't leave any scars on the skin.
- Acne chemical peel is good for treating mild to moderate forms of acne by reducing oiliness, appearance of pores, and shallow acne scars.
- Laser therapy. In this technique, a prescribed medicine is applied to the affected area and then activated by a light or laser.
